Creator of the Resilience Academy, Diane Sieg spent 23 years working as an ER nurse in hospitals across the country. Today, as a resilience speaker, author, coach, and champion, Diane teaches healthcare organizations how to create resilient cultures through her keynotes, half-day or full-day seminars, resilience challenges, retreats, and coaching at the individual, department, and organizational level. There is always chaos in healthcare and resilience is the teachable, effective, game-changing antidote. Diane teaches the resilience skills needed to cope with burnout, stress, and disengagement, helping healthcare workers restore joy, meaning, and connection to their noble work.

A Message from Diane:
Although I literally helped put people back together, working 23 years in emergency rooms across the country, my passion has always been to help others breakthrough before they breakdown. I have been involved in the health and fitness field for over 30 years as a life coach helping others take a step back and re-frame their approach to life and as a fitness instructor teaching everything from kick-boxing to yoga.
When I left the emergency room, I wanted to help healthcare providers, especially nurses, take care of themselves. My first book, STOP Living Life Like an EMERGENCY! Rescue Strategies for the Overworked and Overwhelmed, led me to speak to thousands of healthcare providers at national conferences, association meetings, and individual hospitals.

As a self-proclaimed recovering adrenaline junkie, I found the practice of mindfulness and yoga to be very grounding. Using these resilience skills helped me heal during some challenging life transitions (including a painful divorce and even more painful, early-age hip replacement!) That propelled me to bring more of this message to healthcare through my second book, 30 Days to Grace; A Daily Practice to Achieve Your Ultimate Goals.

  • There is a “compassion crisis” in healthcare today with a great paradox. While healthcare is inherently compassionate, the very connection we need to make to be effective caregivers can cause stress and burnout, undermining our ability to be compassionate. The solution to this paradox lies in understanding the critical differences between compassion, empathy, and sympathy. Understanding those differences improves patient outcomes, engages the caregiver, and drives hospital revenues. The critical skill required to build resilience with compassion is the often-overlooked element of self-compassion. Self-compassion has been shown to protect caregivers from compassion fatigue and increase their satisfaction in their caregiving roles. Compassion and self-compassion are teachable skills that produce a remarkable difference in engagement, morale --the antidote to burnout.

  • According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we lose 300-400 physicians by suicide each year. Physicians struggle to maintain the value and joy that brought them to medicine, resulting in record-high burnout. Today, doctors are called upon to be both technical and clinical superheroes, while burdened with more responsibilities and pressures --taking a toll. Most doctors are hesitant to seek out support and unfortunately the practices that could help them are just starting to be recognized in medical schools. Critical resilience skills such as mindfulness, compassion, and self-leadership are teachable and practical skills that can change the trajectory of burnout, disconnection, excess, and lack of meaning --making a difference now.
