Trisha Torrey, Speaker
If you are a patient, trying to make your way through the healthcare system to get the best care you can, you want Trisha on your side. But if you are a healthcare administrator, provider or payer, your bigger interest is in what Trisha is telling those patients - and - what patients are telling her. Why? More about this speaker:
If you are a patient, trying to make your way through the healthcare system to get the best care you can, you want Trisha on your side.
But if you are a healthcare administrator, provider or payer, your bigger interest is in what Trisha is telling those patients -- and -- what patients are telling her.
Why? Because you’ll learn that it’s wise to keep your patients close, but your Trisha-coached patients closer.
Trisha Torrey is Every Patient’s Advocate. A former marketing consultant who specialized in defining target markets and building brands, she suffered her own comeuppance with healthcare, causing her to take stock, and switch careers.
In 2004, she was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive lymphoma and told she had only months to live. While researching possibilities, and despite resistance from her oncologist, she figured out on her own that she had been misdiagnosed. In fact, she had no cancer, a fact later confirmed by the NIH.
Trisha figured that if such a heinous misdiagnosis could happen to her, it could happen to anyone. Since then her focus has been on improving patient success in the American healthcare system. She coaches patients to be “guerrilla patients” – teaching them some conventional, but many more not-so-conventional ways they can communicate more effectively with their providers, stay safe in the healthcare environment, research their diagnoses and treatment options, and be wise healthcare consumers.
Of interest to your organization will be learning the tactics she teaches, so those in your organization who encounter these guerrilla patients will know how to most effectively deal with them. In the bigger picture, and perhaps more important to your organization is Trisha’s ability to translate patient needs – most of which are about understanding the system and managing expectations – into actionable ideas for your organization. Those ideas, when implemented, can result in improved patient safety, patient satisfaction, and as a result, patient outcomes, all of which may lower costs while enhancing the experience and loyalty of patients.
Trisha is a sought-after speaker who incites her audiences into action, while keeping them focused – even entertained – at the same time. When she’s not standing at the podium (or more likely wandering among audience members), she writes a newspaper column, hosts a weekly radio talk show, blogs regularly, and is the patient empowerment expert at About.com. She is regularly quoted by mainstream and health media, including CNN, the Wall Street Journal, NPR and Bottom Line Health. In 2008, she was named one of CNN’s Heroes of Patient Empowerment.
Trisha’s book, You Bet Your Life! The 10 Mistakes Every Patient Makes (How to Fix Them to Get the Health Care You Deserve) was published in early 2010.
