Nationally recognized for his work in quality improvement, patient safety and outcome reporting, Dr. Byrnes has contributed to several books, including The Healthcare Quality Book (2003), Global Fees for Episodes of Care (1998), and The Health Care Professional's Guide to Patient Centered Care for the 21st Century (1998), The Physician's Guide to Disease Management (1997), and Redesigning Healthcare Delivery (1996). He is a founding editor and editor emeritus of Disease Management, a peer-reviewed international journal and currently serves as the medical editor for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, an American Governance and Leadership Group publication.
Prior to joining Spectrum Health, Dr. Byrnes held senior executive positions at some of the nation’s leading healthcare systems, including Sharp HealthCare, Catholic Healthcare West, and Lovelace Health Systems. As Senior Vice President, Clinical Effectiveness, at Sharp HealthCare, he led systemwide initiatives in quality improvement, patient safety, electronic medical record design and outcome reporting. At Lovelace, Dr. Byrnes served as the Vice President for Quality Improvement and President and CEO of Lovelace Healthcare Innovations. During his tenure he led the development and implementation of the award-winning Episodes of Care (EOC) disease management program.
With experience in integrated health systems, hospitals, and medical groups, Dr. Byrnes has designed quality improvement, patient safety and outcome reporting programs for organizations throughout the
