Dennis D. Pointer, PhD

Dr. Pointer is founder and principal, Dennis D. Pointer & Associates. He has completed over 250 governance consulting and speaking engagements for hospitals and health systems, other nonprofit organizations, commercial corporations, professional/trade associations and governmental agencies.  Denny was a founding Vice President and Partner of the American Governance & Leadership Group, LLC, now the American Hospital Association’s Center for Healthcare Governance.  He has served as a member/chairperson of over 20 boards.

Denny is the author of twelve books including Really Governing (Delmar, 1996) and Board Work (Jossey-Bass 1999); both are winners of the James A. Hamilton Book of the Year Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has also written: Getting to Great: Principles of Health Care Organization Governance, The High Performance Board, The Health Care Industry: A Primer for Board Members and Essentials of Health Care Finance: A Primer for Board Members … all published by Jossey-Bass. He is completing two new books: Governing the 21st Century Healthcare Organization: Transforming the Work and Contributions of Your Board and Navigating the Boardroom: 41 Maxims - Things You Must Know and Do to Be a Great Director.

Denny is Virginia Mason - Austin Ross Professor of Healthcare Management, Department of Health Services, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Washington.  He has held two previous endowed chairs: John J. Hanlon Professor, Program in Health Administration, Graduate School of Public Health, San Diego State University (1991-2002); and the Arthur Graham Glasgow Chair of Health Services Management at the Medical College of Virginia (1986-1991). From 1975 to 1986 he was affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles were he was: Associate Director, UCLA Medical Center; Professor and Head, Program in Health Services Management, School of Public Health; Professor, Anderson School of Management; and Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Bio-Behavioral Sciences, School of Medicine. During his tenure at UCLA, he was a Research Fellow at the RAND Corporation. He has held faculty appointments at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine ( New York ) and the Baruch School of Management (City University of New York), in addition to having served as Associate Director, Department of Teaching Hospitals, Association of American Medical Colleges. 

Denny is an honorary life member of the Healthcare Forum, a recipient of the Foster G. McGaw Medal of Excellence in Health Administration, Education and Research, and has been a Dozor Distinguished Visiting Professor of Medical Administration at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva, Israel. He received his B.S. in organizational psychology (with minors in religious history and philosophy) from Iowa State University and Ph.D. in health administration from the University of Iowa.
